You should calculate one moving box per square meter of living space. For a typical single home, you should be able to get by with about 30 moving boxes. For a multi-person household, you should count on 20-25 moving boxes per person. Remember to put a maximum load of 15-20 kg in the moving boxes and ensure that you leave the carrying holes empty. Keep heavy and non-breakable items at the bottom and light items at the top. Special clothing boxes are available for transporting clothing items.

For a three to four-room apartment, you can expect a volume of 25 to 35 cubic metres, while a single-family home will usually have a volume of more than 40 cubic metres. Anyone who is moving a home or running a removals company will need to consider many things. One of the most important points is to register or re-register in person at the relevant residents’ registration office (in Berlin, this function is performed by the citizens’ registration offices). Re-registration is required by law in Germany and must usually be done within 14 days of the transfer. If you are renting an apartment, remember to obtain the so-called Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. During your appointment, you should also re-register your vehicle (if you have one). Remember to inform all relevant authorities about your new address. Use a checklist for private removals, which you can download from the Internet, to complete and check off all the required steps.
