De-register, re-register, or register your residence?

Have you just moved? Then you are probably still busy unpacking. But don’t forget to plan enough time for formalities in between so that you don’t miss any important deadlines. For example, think about canceling, re-registering, and registering with utilities, savings banks, insurance companies, or subscriptions. You should also inform the residents’ registration office about your new address. On this page, we would like to explain what you should do if you want to cancel, re-register, or register your place of residence.

Register your residence

Have you just moved to a municipality or city? Then you must register your new place of residence with the residents’ registration office (also called the civic office or district office) or provide your new address. There are two exceptions to the registration requirement:

  • You are already registered in Germany and will not live in your apartment for more than 6 months.
  • You live abroad and have not lived in your apartment in Germany for more than 3 months.

You usually have 7 to 14 days to do this. If you miss the deadline, you will have to pay a fine, unless you can explain the reason for the delay and provide proof of illness.

Registering your residence: How to do it right

Do you want to register your place of residence? Then you must first fill out and sign an official registration form. You can find the form for Berlin below. Registration is usually free.

You then present this form to the authorities along with a valid identity card or passport and the landlord’s confirmation. Do you want to register other members of your family as well? In this case, you will need their identity cards and passports as well. After registration, you will receive a registration certificate. You do not need to submit the rental agreement, the landlord’s confirmation is enough. Read more about it here.

Registration for multiple apartments or a second home

If you have multiple homes, for example, because you have to commute for work, you should register one of them as your main residence. This is usually where you spend most of your time. If you live with your family, you should register your family residence. Do you have a second home? That should be registered too.

Change of residence

So if you move to a new city, you have to register. But are you moving to the same city or municipality? Then you have to re-register your place of residence at the residents’ registration office within 14 days. If you want to re-register your place of residence, you will need your identity card or passport. You can make an appointment online just like when registering.

Deregister your residence

Are you moving out of your apartment and not into a new apartment in Germany? Then you must cancel the registration at the registration office at least one week before and at most 14 days before you actually move out, in person and with a valid ID card or passport. In some cities, the cancellation of registration can also be sent by post. In particular, you must cancel your place of residence if you …:

  • Move abroad
  • Leave a second home
  • Become homeless
